In the Studio with Bruce Swedien

Ever heard of the album “Thriller”? Or, how about the artist known as Michael Jackson?  Of course you have!  Thriller is the number one selling album on the planet, and I had the honor of spending a day in the studio with the man who mixed and recorded Thriller… and every other Michael Jackson album, plus many more incredible artists. Bruce Swedien is truly a legend in the industry, with 13 nominations and 5 Grammys. He is also an incredibly down to earth guy willing to help out and teach younger engineers like myself.  To...

2013 Graduation – Bachelor of Science Degree in Recording Arts – Full Sail University

I started at Full Sail University with the goal of graduating as one of the top students in my class. I had the opportunity to surround myself with a great group of students, who were all committed to helping each other succeed.  When the time finally came, and after a ton of hard work, it was extremely rewarding to graduate with a 4.0 as the class Valedictorian. On top of graduating as the class Valedictorian, I was also awarded the Advanced Achievement Award. This prestigious award was voted on by my instructors and peers and presented to...

Full Sail University – Group Final Project Video

With one month left to go… My lab group at Full Sail University just finished our final project. We put together an artist pitch, marketing plans, budgets, merchandise designs, artist promo photos, as well as a full production of Addison Taylor’s original song, “Pedestal”.  The past month was a great learning experience. I’ll hold onto this music video as a great memory of what life was like at Full Sail University. The artist is Addison Taylor. The video was edited by Sam Pak. The music was produced and mixed by...

Music Producing & Arrangement

Well… I just finished my last day of Music Producing & Arrangement class. That means only 2 months left, and I still have managed to keep my 4.0. But, let me just say that this month has been one of my favorite classes at Full Sail. My instructor, Rick Navarro, is an incredible guy. He made music theory seem so easy, and he also managed to make a personal connection with just about every student in my class.  This month was extra amazing, because people came out of the woodwork and shared some projects that blew me away! It was...

AIA Final Project

by: Blake James Sumrall Aesthetics: Creating the sound for the map. This project is a continuation of work from my last blog post titled, “Sound Design for a First Person Shooter Weapon“. My goal was to maintain the same direction and vibe that I established when creating the sounds for the weapon. Meaning, simple and as organic sounding as possible. This thought process led me back to Darren Korb’s “Bastion”, my initial inspiration. I really wanted to follow some key concepts that Darren used in Bastion, and...

Sound Design for a First Person Shooter Weapon

It’s about time to share some sound design for video games. Here is the latest interactive sound design project that I have worked on while attending Full Sail University. The purpose of the project was to create and implement layers of sounds for a weapon in a first person shooter style video game. That means that I was able jump into a game development software program, and actually tie the sounds directly into the game in order to produce a functional example. Check out the video below (of my functional example), then continue...

“Better Days” – Songwriting Class Project

For my final project in Songwriting & Development class, I had to write and record a song that fit certain music theory and lyrical requirements. Within a 4 day period of time I managed to write the song, record all the instruments and vocals, and mix the tracks on top of other projects and studying for finals. It may not be the best mix in the world, but I’m pretty proud of what I was able to accomplish in that amount of time, and I would like to share it with...
